9/29/13 First Grand Slam

Ever since I have moved to South Florida 3 years ago the “Big 3″ have consumed me. The Grand Slam (Permit, Bonefish, Tarpon in one day) seemed like a distant fantasy and an impossible achievement. My good friend Derek recently had his day and proved it possible to me. It still seemed highly unlikely as his skill and patience far exceeds mine. No matter the skill level though, to achieve this feat requires a lot of things go your way.  Read on to hear the story…

7/26/13 Mini Season

I had Cuda Kyle in town for the week.  The diving was stellar!  We both had a blast gathering our limits each day.  The rest of the days were spent spearing hogfish and other random reef fish.  I got my first grouper here in South Florida.  Good times!

Day 2 mini 2013ss

The next day we loaded up the SUPs.  There was a good West breeze all day.  We still managed a few reds but we had hopes for much more.

Quickie IX – SUP Redfish

Lots of nice reds around.  Many following big rays.  Some Permit tailing on the same flats.

6/21/13 Bote in the Park

I went to ENP yesterday and surprisingly thing were slow.  Lots of slot red singles but not much more to speak of.  A few small tarpon early and a few small snook that I got no shots at.  I did catch a redfish one handed with my leader in the tip…

6/13/13 SUP Bonefish

I headed out early to chase some tailers on the Bote. First cast of the day resulted in this nice bonefish. It was a miracle I caught this one as he wrapped me on a piece of coral… surprisingly he was still hooked up after I untangled it. I’ll take it! I had some other good shots at bones and permit but no other bites. Great day on the water!

05/23/13 Midnight in the Marquesas

It was like a scene right out of “Life of Pi”. The moon was brighter than I have ever seen it in my whole life. I knew there was water on the flats but it was so calm and clear that it looked like there was none. Bioluminescence covered the flats with flashes of green glow. Shark fins and tarpon rolling all around the boat throughout the night. At one point I randomly looked at the sky and I was truly amazed with what I saw. 3 giant rocks with huge flames behind them shot across the sky…I’m pretty sure Dan was scared for his life. It really looked like something out of the movies.  They were so low and moving slow with really bright fire.  It lasted about 10 seconds.  It was something I doubt I’ll ever see again.  Read on for the fishing report…

5/08/13 Islamorada to Glades Overnight

I went for a long journey on the SUP with Alex and Dan.  Started off with big laid up tarpon…then some shot at tailing permit.  Big reds the whole way.  Late evening the bones showed up.  The weather was stellar and so was the fishing.  The No-seeums were rough.  I will be more prepared next time.
